Silver Jewelry
We all know silver! In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if you have a few pieces of your own! Silver has attracted jewelry designers’ consumers for decades as a stylish and very affordable jewelry option. Silver is the whitest of the jewelry metals and holds the most brilliant luster when polished.
Due to its high luster, softer nature than other metals, silver is a good choice for jewelry. Silver metal is often used in making rings, as well as fashion jewelry with bracelets, pendants and earrings. Silver is a precious metal and, much like gold, is much too fine to be utilized in a 100% pure form.
To make it durable enough for use in jewelry, pure silver is often alloyed with small quantities of copper. The copper is added to strengthen the silver and the resulting product is .925 sterling silver, that you commonly see on the market.
Silver tarnishes when exposed to air or water containing ozone or hydrogen sulfide. In order to prevent oxidation, (that blueish-green color you might see in your jewelry box items over time!) some people like to rhodium or platinum plate their jewelry. In addition,Silver does not tarnish often when worn regularly! In order to achieve a yellow gold look using silver, it is very common to use a thin layer of yellow gold.
To make sure what you have is really silver, it is commonly stamped either SS, 925 or 950 on the inside.
As trends tend to steer away from yellow colored metals and to white colored metals, Silver is an excellent choice for all styles, from traditional to contemporary, without breaking your budget! This timeless metal isn’t going out of style anytime soon.
